THE PROTEC TEAM
Protec employs a highly skilled and diverse workforce of over a hundred employees including Registered Dental Technicians, Dental Technician Assistants, Administrative Staff, Office Clerks, Delivery Drivers, Supervisors and Managers. Every staff member contributes to the quality results and service that Protec provides. Below are the biographies of the key managers and founder of Protec Dental Laboratories.

President and General Manager

Neal Russell received his dental technician license in 1981 after graduating from Dental Technology at Vancouver Community College in 1979. He is President and General Manager of Protec Dental Laboratories Ltd. and is in charge of administration, human resources and marketing.
A strong advocate for education, Neal stays informed of industry advancements through continued education in all areas of dentistry. In March 2005, Neal received a certificate of appreciation award from the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia recognizing his valuable contribution to the industry. In 2008, Neal initiated a project whereas Protec would begin the process of embracing and integrating new technology. Through this process they have become a national leader in CAD/CAM and Digital Dentistry manufacturing techniques offering a variety of high quality restorations.
I believe that the next 20 years will be fabulous for the dental laboratory industry as the “Baby Boomers” drive the demands of restorative and esthetic dentistry. The demand for services from dental technicians will grow as this generation pursues a better lifestyle through good health and appearance. |

Partner and Manager - Orthodontics

Jeff Player specializes in orthodontics and has worked with Protec for over 26 years. Jeff received his BC dental technician license in 1992. As well, Jeff assists with administration of the Protec group.
In the ever changing field of orthodontics, Jeff remains current with all recent developments by attending various national and international dental seminars conferences.
My goals include providing top quality appliances and leading edge technical advice, creating opportunities for advancement within the company and maintaining an environment that encourages flexibility, an openess to change, teamwork and positive morale. |

Removable Prosthetics/Implants |
Neil Appelbaum was born in South Africa. In 1985, he entered the 4-year national Higher Diploma program in Dental Technology. Neil specializes in all aspects of removable prosthetics and implants and has been with Protec for 14 years. He leads our new CAD/CAM Digital Dentistry Division.
In 1994, Neil immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia. He qualified and received his BC dental technician license in January 1996. Neil is a strong advocate and student of the Kois Centre in Seattle.
In a technology that continues to evolve, my focus is on continued education in implants, digital dentistry solutions and all aspects of removable prosthetics. |

Gerrit van Schalkwyk qualified in dental technology in 1991 from Pretoria Technical College in South Africa.
Gerrit immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1995. In 1996, he qualified for his BC dental technician license from the College of Dental Technicians of BC. Gerrit specializes in all areas of crown & bridge and implants and has been with Protec for 12 years. In 2005, Gerrit received his Master Ceramist accreditation from LVI.
My goals are to stay on the leading edge of changes in technology and continue to provide the best in esthetic restorative dentistry.

Technical Representative |
Michael Malone has been employed by Protec for 25 years. Originally in the laboratory working in orthodontics, Mike's current role as a Technical Representative is to liaise between clients and our department managers to provide the highest level of laboratory services available.
Mike is also involved in organizing seminars for dentists and represents Protec at many meetings. He has assembled an extensive presentation entitled “Innovative New Products for the 21st Century” and is presently offering this valuable information to a host of student groups, study clubs, and associations.
I ensure that our doctors get the best customer experience possible by connecting them to our laboratory. I provide our clients with information on our new products and the latest techniques. |
